Where Did The Hairbrush Originate?

One of the daily grooming tools that most women own is a hairbrush. Have you ever thought about where the hairbrush originated? There are very few references to the hairbrush in history, but there is sufficient evidence that it did. In the time of Ancient Rome, men and women of nobility and gentry wore brilliantly coiffed wigs over their own natural hair. In these times, it is relatively safe to presume that both men and women utilized these grooming aids as a way to keep their hair and wigs in place.

No one knows the actual time these grooming aids first came into existence but archeological findings clearly show that they were there. Hairstyles have changed drastically throughout history, pictographs, tablets, pictures, drawings and archeological digs have found evidence of them. The elaborate hairstyles that were traced back in history to the Ancient Romans and Greeks clearly show the vast range of hairstyles that we used. Due to the extreme heat and sandy soil, one can only assume that both men and women kept their locks cut short and doffed elaborate wigs for ceremonial and festive activities.

These earlier hairbrushes were probably made from natural bristles such as wild boar or porcupine depending on the time frame in history or area. Boar bristle grooming aids or hairbrushes facilitated the purpose of detangling, styling and transferring the hair€™s natural oil or sebum and distributed it evenly from root to tip. Basic design of the hairbrush has remained the same throughout history although the products used to make them have changed over the years. The design of the hairbrush consisted of a paddle or handle and bristles or teeth.

In order for proper grooming and styling of the hair, it was normally done by a professional who knew various treatments and the newest fad or style. Wonder if they tipped the barber when their hair or wig was fashioned? Viking men were also careful about grooming and used combs to do their hair. Many things have advanced and evolved over the years including the hairbrush. Grooming aids such as comb, brush and mirror were a highly treasured item in any household and were often given as wedding gifts to adorn a ladies or gents table, very close at hand when the need arose.

As history evolved with more scientific methods and introduction of the industrial age, the hairbrush also evolved. In today€™s world, there are many shapes, styles, colors and specific types that are tailored to a certain type of hair. Natural or synthetic hairbrushes
