Hair Extensions: How To Care For Your New Long Locks
Long hair is something that many women crave, but not all of us have the patience or the time to grow our locks. It takes a lot of work and nurture to grow hair into a long style and still look healthy and this is why many women try and fail in favour of a short style that is easier to maintain. However, waiting months and months for your hair to grow isn’t the only option, nowadays many people and celebrities are turning to hair extensions to give their locks the lengths and body they so desperately want.
Hair extensions are a relatively quick and easy way of achieving the hair of your dreams; you can step into the salon with a short style and walk out literally a few hours later with a gorgeous long style. We all know that when our hair looks good, we feel good and this is why hair extensions are now so popular. Whether you want added length or volume, you can achieve any look you like with hair extensions.
Once your stylist has created the hair of your dreams with hair extensions, you will want to keep your hair looking good for as long as possible. Depending on what sort of hair extensions you have gone for, there will be different aftercare advice but it is always important to follow the advice given by the experts. Any advice provided by your stylist will be given in order to prolong the lifespan of your hair extensions and keep them looking good as possible.
After you have had your extensions fitted you will need to wait at least 48 hours before you wash them. This will give the bonds enough time to set and make sure that the extensions don’t fall out. When it comes to shampooing and conditioning your new locks you should always use the products that are recommended by your stylist. These are specially designed to prolong the life of your extensions and should be used as some products can cause the bond to weaken.
You can wash your hair in pretty much the same way as you would do your own hair, only be careful not to scrub your hair too much as this can cause tangles. When it comes to conditioning your long locks you need to be careful not to get any conditioner on the bonds as this can cause them to weaken and fall out. Long hair will require a lot of conditioning in order to keep it looking healthy so make sure you do regular deep-conditioning treatments to keep the ends moisturised.
Once the hair is washed you can start drying in. Use a blotting motion to remove excess water but avoid excess rubbing. The bonds are at their most vulnerable when wet so be careful when handling them at this stage. Dry your hair as much as possible with the towel and then you can use a hairdryer. Make sure you set the hair dryer on a cool setting to avoid damaging the bonds, and if using straighteners keep these away from the bonds as well.
Hair extensions require twice a day brushing to keep them tangle-free. Make sure you are using a soft bristle brush and go carefully! Start at the bottom and work your way up sticking to small sections at a time. Avoid combing between the bond and the scalp as this can put pressure on the scalp and make sure you are separating the bonds on a regular basis in order to avoid matting.
You can use normal hair products on your new hair but just make sure that you avoid putting anything oily directly onto the bonds. If possible, tie your hair up in a ponytail or braid it in a plait when sleeping to avoid tangles when asleep.
It isn’t rocket science to keep your hair extensions looking great, if you just follow these simple guidelines your hair will look amazing for many months to come!
