How to wash, style and take care of your hair extensions

Hair extensions can be a great addition to your look; they’ve been famously used by celebrities worldwide, and are renowned for giving people a brand new look in an instant. Whether you’re looking for length, volume, texture, hair extensions can do it all, but how do you maintain them? One of the forefront queries with hair extensions has to be how to wash them, and a close second is how to style them. Believe it or not, taking care of your hair extensions takes no effort at all, and can be fitted into your usual routine with extreme ease.

When it comes to your extensions, it’s important you keep them clean, although they don’t get dirty as fast as your normal hair does, they will still need to be kept very clean, so it’s important you wash them as soon as they need to. When your hair is dirty it can often tangle easily, and as swear builds up when doing every day activities it can make the problem a lot worse, especially after exercise, so always wash it after doing anything active to ensure they stay clean. Brush your hair before washing it to remove any tangles, and wash your hair in a downwards motion, it’s always recommended that you wash your hair like this (i.e. when you’re in the shower, or with your head back over a sink like in your salon). Always use a good quality shampoo for your hair; your hair extension specialist should be able to tell you what products are the best for extensions. Also, use a deep conditioner to ensure that your extensions are properly moisturized and prevent them from drying out.

When styling your hair, only use soft bristles brushes as they are kinder to your hair. Start brushing the ends of your hair first in downward strokes and slowly work your way upwards, never brush upwards as this can cause serious matting and knotting problems in hair extensions, so avoid what’s known as ‘Back Combing’ at all costs. You should brush your hair around 2 or 3 times a day to ensure that it stays tangle free and smooth. It’s a well known fact that heat can be your hairs worst enemy, and this is especially true of extensions, the more you inflict high levels of heat on your hair extensions, the less time they will last for, so always be careful whenever heat comes into contact with your hair, blow driers should be kept on a low heat, and the more you can allow your hair to dry naturally the better. Never go to bed with wet hair, and always try to tie it into a loose pony tail for bed to make sure that it doesn’t get too tangled.

Taking care of your hair extensions needn’t be a chore, a lot of what you need to do can be fitted around your daily routine to ensure your hair extensions remain natural and lush for as long as possible. Unhealthy extensions can be a dead give away, so always make sure that they are well maintained.
