The History Of Yuko Hair Straightening.

The Yuko Hair Straightening system was created in Japan in 1996 by Yuko Yamashita, who is a stylist and salon owner. With her product she aimed to make people’s lives easier when it came to dealing with their hair care system. As a stylist Yuko was constantly coming into contact with women who were unhappy with the behaviour of their hair. The most common complaint that she encountered was women with unruly hair that needed extra styling time in the morning in order to tame it. Women who were terrified of going out in the rain as the inclement weather would almost certainly transform their carefully styled locks into a frizzy mess. These were the sorts of women that Yuko wanted to help.

Women who suffer from unruly hair tend to spend hours and hours of time trying to smooth and straighten their hair, styling which is ultimately damaging their hair. Yuko wanted her customers to have beautiful, healthy hair without spending hours attempting to tame it to behave in such a way. Yuko decided to approach a Japanese sports, health and beauty company called Phitten and together they created Yuko Hair Straightening which proved revolutionary to hair styling across the world.

You wouldn’t be blamed for wondering why of all the different races around the world, it would be a Japanese lady who created this revolutionary hair straightening system, after all aren’t Japanese women known for their poker straight hair? Surely it would make more sense if a lady from Afro-Caribbean origins with typically Afro-Caribbean type hair had created such a product? The Japanese are thought to have naturally straight and quite fine hair; however this is not necessarily a true assumption.  Contrary to popular belief, a high percentage of Japanese ladies have a natural kink or wave to their hair. After all, it was as a direct response to her client’s complaints about their hair and its unruly behaviour that the Yuko Hair Straightening system was produced. 

The special straightening process works by utilising collagen, keratin and silk proteins which penetrate the hair follicle. A hot iron is then used to promote heat oxidisation to leave the hair smooth, silky and manageable. The system is suitable for all types of hair but in particular it is beneficial on afro-hair as it leaves it straight and smooth, and on bleached hair that has been damaged by previous chemical treatments. The treatment does not only straighten and smooth the hair follicle; it also uses heat to restructure the hair’s protein bond so in effect it repairs damaged strands leaving it healthier and more manageable than ever.

In Japan Yuko Hair Straightening is used in over 35,000 salons and it is also popular across the world. There are now more than 600 salons in the UK that offer the Yuko system as a treatment.
