The history of Hair Extensions
It might seem like hair extensions have been around for no time at all, simply bursting onto the scene only in recent years, but this isn’t true, hair extensions are not a new invention, they’re actually been around since Ancient Egyptian times, a time when not only women, but men wore them too. Since those ancient times, hair extensions have jumped in and out of fashion like you wouldn’t believe.
In the 1800s, fake hair was actually highly frowned upon, and most women allowed their hair to be as natural as possible, however, they boomed back into fashion during the Romantic era, a time where women wore the most elaborate Apollo knots they could find. For a long time, they were the height of fashion, and by the time the Victorian era came around, hair extensions and hair pieces were used a lot more extensively. Once the early 20th Century came around, Edwardian women wore intricate and extravagant hair additions in order to create a more ‘pompadour’ hairstyle, which looked a lot like the ladies wore teapots on their heads. It was considering very high fashion, and all high class women had to have one.
By the time the 1920s came into swing, hair extensions had almost died out, big hair was no longer the big thing, and more subtle hair styles took the centre stage, it wasn’t until around the 1940s when hair extensions came back into fashion, as long hair was suddenly the biggest trend, so women all over the world starting indulging in hair extensions once more. By the 1960s big hair and hair extensions were back and in full swing. Coils and updo’s were seen on women everywhere, they were the definition of fashion at the time, and the big hair looks were all created with extravagant hair pieces.
Throughout the 1970s, wigs were becoming more the fashion as opposed to hair extensions, and by the time the 80s came around, big hair was in, but it just had to be natural. This saw another dip in hair extension popularity, and it slowly became an unknown to people. But the 1990s changed all that for good.
By the time the 90s hit the scene, hair extensions took another rise in popularity, mainly due to the fact they were suddenly a lot more affordable, and salon’s nationwide were willing to style your extensions and put them in for you in order to get a fantastically natural look that was rival to none. The main source of the boom was the well known Spice Girl no longer known as Posh Spice, but the famous Victoria Beckham. Her hair changed as each day went by, one day it was short, the next long, so it was obvious hair extensions were coming into play in a big way. She later spoke about her love for hair extensions, and the versatility they offered her, and soon everybody wanted them.
Nowadays, extensions have come to the aid of a wide variety of different people, from teens looking for long hair, bride looking for a beautiful look for their wedding, or older women trying to replace their thinning locks. Hair extensions have been helping people achieve brand new looks for hundreds of years, so why not modernise yours today?
