Having Hair Extensions Applied

The process of having hair extensions applied involves attaching human or synthetic hair to your natural hair by one of many methods and although they can be expensive they have dramatically come down in price over the past few years.

The main concern that people hold when it comes to hair extensions is that they will damage natural hair. This is far from the truth provided that the extensions are applied and removed by a professional. Also other worries include how the extensions will be treated when they are in the hair and if anyone will be able to tell if you are wearing them. Again the answer to concerns such as these lie with whether you are having the extensions applied professionally or not. In order to benefit the most from hair extensions it is essential that you have them applied by a professional. It is also important that when you have your extensions put in that you treat them like your natural hair, what is meant by this is that you wash and condition them in the same way that you would wash and condition your natural hair; however you do need to treat your extensions with respect as they are obviously not going to grow back so being gentle with them will mean they will last longer and you will get your monies worth.

One essential thing that you should do to your hair extensions is you need to make sure you thoroughly moisturise them every two or three days. This is so important because your extensions will not receive your natural scalp oils so you will need this added moisture. If you fail to do this your extensions will become brittle and break easily, which will lead to split and horrible looking as well as feeling ends.

You should also remember that your hair extensions have an average life span of a few months, normally in the region of six to 12 weeks meaning that once this time is up you will need to have the extensions removed and completely re-done. If you leave your hair extensions in for longer than their recommended time you run the risk of causing permanent damage to your hair.

As previously mentioned there are many different ways in which the extensions can be applied, one of the most popular ways in which this is done is through the individual method, which involves taking small amounts (usually between 20 and 50 strands) of the extensions and applying them to small sections of your own hair by using a variety of methods including heat fusing, gluing, clamping with metal rods or using waxes and polymers. All of these methods (other than clamping) involve coating your own hair with a chemical or foreign substance.

As well as having individual strands placed in you also have the option of having your extensions placed in using a weft. A weft is usually attached about the middle of your head and is placed at the top of the hair strand at the roots they then flow freely and blend into your natural hair. These wefts can either be made by machine but the best wefts are handmade. The benefit of having them handmade is they can be made to match your own hair colour and type.

These wefts are attached to your head by sewing them to a tiny braid, known as a track, this track is made out of your own hair and runs horizontally around the back of your head. These tracks are done so that you can€™t see them. Once the tracks have been done the wefts are then sown to them and your own hair is then blended over the top.
