How to Mend Split Ends

Any woman having hair of any length knows full well the problems and hazards of split hair or split ends. Also known as trichoptilosis, split ends occur due to damaged hair cuticles resulting in the strands splitting lengthwise.

These are caused due to various reasons, like over-washing of hair, excessive use of chemicals and hair styling tools, damage due to environmental factors, or lack of regular maintenance. No matter how they are caused, split ends, once developed are not easy to get rid of.

You will either need to trim your hair to remove them, or wear your hair up to disguise them. You can also make use of these homely tips to merge the split ends together temporarily.

1. Use mayonnaise once a month for deep-conditioning of your hair. Mayonnaise contains eggs and oil, which provide protein to hair strands, and locks the moisture. Thus your locks will remain soft and supple. Apply mayonnaise on dry hair, and rinse off with shampoo after 30 minutes.

2. Avoid combing wet hair, and even if you do, comb with a wide-tooth comb only. Wet hair gets stretched quite easily, and hence if you use brushes and fine-tooth combs on wet hair, the strands will get stretched and weakened.

3. While blow drying hair, do not use hot air unless for curling purposes. Hot air puffs up hair fibers, causing them to split apart.

4. Use shine-enhancing products containing hair-strengthening herbs on hair ends after styling to reduce the appearance of split ends.

5. Wear your hair up in a bun or French twist to disguise the split ends.

Although there€™s no way to mend split ends permanently, you sure can prevent them from occurring in the first place. By following a healthy hair care routine along with deep conditioning your hair once a month, you can prevent split end problems and ensure that your hair remains supple and flexible always.
