The 'Bob': The Ultimate Modern Classic Hairstyle

One renowned hair stylist in Australia advises clients to start planning their 'new' look 6 months in advance, and within that time to get their hair in the best shape possible. So, if you're left with a spare hour or two then now's the time to start thinking about which hairstyle you want to be seen with for 2009. This is especially true if you're thinking of a style like the 'bob', which once again is bang on trend for the coming year. Already adorned by the likes of Katie Holmes and Rihanna, the ever-fashionable 'bob' is here to stay.

For 2009 hair will become more stylised and the messy look will become less popular, with the strongest trend this season being the return of the precision cut and the evergreen 'bob' style. With so many different kinds of 'bob' styles to choose from, the question is which style is best suited to your hair type and your lifestyle? Is it the graduated cut that puts the oomph back into the style, with long convertible bangs softening up a neck-length cut? Add a few lowlights to add dimension and this style can take you all the way through to 2010.

The most popular 'bob' is the sleek chin-length version, seen on most celebs, with its clean curved edges, and shiny frizz-free surface. It is these qualities that made the 'bob' such a classic in the first place and yet are also those that make it fresh and modern today. And then there is the angled shag, which provides flicked-up edges and a long, swooping crown €“ the guaranteed way to give the basic 'bob' a super-chic twist.

Or, how about one of this year's sexiest and chic 'bobs'? Headed up by Hayden Panettiere, the pint-sized actress who put the heroine into Heroes, she was one starlet who was happy to chop off her blonde locks into a chin-length concave 'bob'. And, of course there should be no forgetting Victoria Beckham, the super-celeb who can spark any trend and whose 'pob' style made a very big mark in the hairdresser's calendar.

But, for 2009, we need to keep the style it slick and shiny, and the 'bob' style can take on any form as long as it's sexy and chic. But whichever style you choose the perfect tools are essential €“ a huge round brush, a hairdryer, a set of hair straighteners and some hair shine spray for a glossy finish and we're all set to recreate the classic style long into 2009 and beyond!
